A twist braid, also called a rope braid, is not actually a braid, but simply two (or more) strands which are twisted by themselves and to each other to create a form that holds the strands by making tension against each other.
Twists work particularly well in curly hair or coarse hair, as that type of hair usually has more natural friction with itself, and will hold the twist better.
